Details of Target Demographic
The major
metropolitan areas in Gauteng, Durban, Cape Town.
Where and when is the project
The
project is continuously spread out over a couple of years and can be
implemented in all the metro areas in any country.
How long will the project run for
5 years as
a start with the option for interested parties to extend the support thereafter. The project itself is meant to be on going.
Relevant market research
See
Proposal at end of section. This request
is intended to get the support from an interested sponsor. In depth feasibility studies can be conducted
once there is support for the proposal.
Local operators, who will benefit from this project, still need to be
identified.
List of confirmed sponsors Past and future
None yet. I only sent this to First National Bank and
The Waste Group
I
specifically target banks as they have the leverage to create wellness for the
informal waste collectors
I see
that there is a company now who took this idea and provided some carts for a
community on the East Rand (east of Johannesburg)
May it be
a blessing to all involved with creating a better life

Media platforms
All - TV
Newspapers
Radio
Adverts in magazines
Internet and other electronic media
Type of sponsorship sought - Financial or other
Financial
- Monthly financial payments / contributions according to the pre-determined
project plan requirements, based on manufacturing outputs.
Other –
Design teams, materials and workshop sponsors etc.
Partnerships with educational and training
institutions
Part of
the project would/could involve the design of the little cart in question. This would benefit the institution which will
be responsible for the design. As The University
of Pretoria is a highly acclaimed research facility I would like to involve
them in this project. I would still need
to confirm if UP would be interested.
PROPOSAL
Background
Many businesses sponsor
many things. This initiative is a down
to earth, honest way for someone to get involved in a greens initiative with a
difference. The company / business could
increase its community involvement by assisting the general public and get the
benefit of the marketing share thereof.
Goal
The aim is to equip street/dustbin
waste collectors, with branded carts, sponsored by a business, Picture for yourself hundreds of little carts
which are daily in the public eye. They
will be designed and branded with the sponsors image and will be visible for
all to see. If a bank sponsors the
project, many new accounts could be opened securing a very real monthly fee for
the bank
The lives of thousands,
or at least hundreds of poor people can be changed for the better
The ever increasing
need to “go green” by recycling waste is a green initiative with a sustainable
difference which will definitely add to the sponsor’s corporate responsibility
and public image.
Challenge
Community
This project will
benefit individual beneficiaries who are currently involved in the recycling
process by means of carting excess recyclable materials to waste recycling
companies.
Each owner of a cart
“sells” his existing cart to Partner (waste recycling company) for R 100. In exchange, he gets a new cart and a bank
account from a bank. He does not
physically get the money.
Each
month R100 is paid by the Partner into this account.
The operator still does
what he normally does and that is to collect all the recyclable materials he
can get. The process should not be over
regulated but incentives will urge each beneficiary to produce more.
These
waste collectors, “entrepreneurs” must enrol in on-going life skills uplifting
programmes
The
project itself will create financial responsibility for each beneficiary.
Partners
Partners
could be the following:
SAPPI or Mondi or both
Waste recycling
companies (where beneficiaries sell their products)
A NGO which can provide daily meals
for the beneficiaries, also a shelter.
A NGO together with
Health Department to provide social skills on a monthly basis
The waste recycling
company will act as link between community and the Sponsors and Manufacturers. They must manage the project in their area.
They buy the old cart
from the beneficiary and issue a new cart to him. Not the spares which will be handled by the
Manufacturer.
They pay each
beneficiary R50 a month, subtracted from proceeds of their waste sales, which
will be used to keep their bank account open – paid directly into bank account
of beneficiary.
Another R 50 is
subtracted from the proceedings of their sales and that is kept by a bank as
payment towards the cart. A price should
be determined and only once paid off; the owner of his cart can sell his cart
to another beneficiary.
Initiate incentives
with various kinds of targets. One of
the aims is to clean up all and even neglected areas.
Manufacturers
Manufacture
carts according to planned schedule and to specification
Deliver
carts to partner’s premises.
Keep a central parts
section to keep carts maintained at a nominal cost to owner of cart. Branded material gets sponsored by a business
and ads gets mounted onto the carts according to the design.
Maintain
carts as a value added service. Parts
need to be bought by the
operators
themselves at a very low cost.
A Financial Institution
Benefit from the
marketing drive, which such a project would bring forth. It is continually “in the face” of the
public. Media campaigns should support
the project.
Assist with opening
bank accounts for each beneficiary at one central branch per area.
Pays manufacturer of
cart the amount for each cart on a monthly delivery plan - Sponsorship
The
sponsor or partner must drive the project and ensure that the image of
the company is not done wrong by
dilapidating carts
Project Manager
I
only do the proposal and will find an NGO to supply basic physical needs to
the waste collectors e.g. a cooked meal
once a week.
Get assistance to help
beneficiaries to manage their social responsibilities e.g. hygiene, substance
abuse etc.
Project Plan
Once there is a positive commitment to
the project, a detailed project plan should be
drawn up.
Planning
could be done by end December 2014
Design
project runs until May 2015
Manufacturing
of first 200 carts done by end 2015
Physical
delivery to beneficiaries could start 1 January 2016
Manufacturing
of second and larger batch of carts done by end December 2016
Financial Requirements (estimates for proposal
sake)

management fee per cart (partner) R 3 000
-
Total R 10 000

-
Beneficiaries

Risk
Care
should be taken against beneficiaries wanting to sell their new carts.

branded sections of the cart must be maintained at all times.
Request
Would you
please consider this proposal and commit your involvement in writing.
I want a
small fee for my input which can be discussed later
One last thought - These street people really
work hard for very little income. Your
commitment could give them the recognition and rewards for their effort.
